Afra Dopfer
After an apprenticeship as wood sculptor 1984-87 and an apprenticeship as a theater sculptor 1987-89, studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Leo Kornbrust and Cristina Iglesias at the 'Chair for Sculpture in Connection with Architecture' 1989-96. She was co-founder and member (1995 - 97) of the artist group Department for Public Appearances. She has been working as a freelance artist since 2000, since 2008 in collaboration with the Christian Pixis Gallery, Munich.
Since her youth she has been interested in dance and movement, and has taken courses in modern dance and contact improvisation at Tanzfabrik Berlin, since 2014 in movement studies with Amos Hetz, Israel. From 2013 to 16 she was a permanent deputy member of the municipal commission for art and construction, Munich, since 2014 she has been teaching design at the architecture faculty of the Munich University of Applied Sciences.
She has received awards and grants from the Bavarian Ministry of Culture and Science, such as the Cités Internationales des Arts Paris grant, 1997, the State Grant Award, 2000, and the USA grant, 2001, the studio grants of the Free State of Bavaria and the LH Munich, as well as two grants from the Art Fund Foundation as a working grant (2008) and catalog grant (2012).
She works multimedia, increasingly in and related to the architectural space. Her art in construction - works can be found in public buildings in the greater Munich area in Großhadern, Faculty for Chemistry and Pharmacy at LMU Munich 1998, in Pullach, senior citizens' home Haus am Wiesenweg 2000, in Hasenbergl, house for children 2019, in Munich - Haidhausen, school on Kirchenstrasse, 2016, and inTrudering, crèche 2013, as well as in Höchstädt, assessment office of the tax office in Munich, 2018 and Erlangen, Fraunhofer Institute, 2019 and in private rooms.
She lives in Munich.
